Bygdin and MB Bitihorn
Av Ivan Mæland / 5. juni 2024
In June, I visited Bygdin in Jotunheimen to photograph MB Bitihorn. Despite the snow and cold, the landscape around Mount Bitihorn was spectacular, providing a perfect backdrop for the boat as it awaited the summer season.
At the beginning of June, I had a fantastic opportunity to visit Bygdin, a picturesque lake in Jotunheimen National Park, Norway. My goal was to photograph the iconic motorboat MB Bitihorn and enjoy the spectacular landscape. Despite the summer being underway, there was still snow and ice around. The weather was cold with a lot of wind and a cloudy sky, but the light was perfect for photography.
The fact that the boat was on land awaiting the summer season was no hindrance. On the contrary, it provided a great opportunity to photograph it with Mount Bitihorn (1607 meters above sea level), after which the boat is named, in the background.
In the season, the boat operates regularly on Lake Bygdin with stops at Torfinnsbu Tourist Cabin and Eidsbugarden. The over 100-year-old boat was originally built in 1912 by Glommens Mekaniske Verksted. Since then, it has undergone several upgrades, including replacing the original 40 hp engine with a powerful 350 hp engine from Scania.
Last summer, I had the pleasure of taking a trip with MB Bitihorn across Bygdin, a truly fantastic experience that I can warmly recommend to anyone who has the opportunity. The combination of natural beauty and historical charm on Bygdin and MB Bitihorn is definitely worth a visit.
